First Day of School

Yes, I know that school started 2 weeks ago. This month has been CRAZY. (Also, these aren't even first day of school photos...)

My baby is in high school! Niki is enjoying The Center School. She finally got the Metro bus schedule down, has figured out her daily schedule (which varies, daily), and loves her teachers. Most importantly, she has homework and is using her brain again (okay, she may not appreciate this but I do after no seeing much homework for the past 2 years). I've gone down to the school with her a few times and I like what I've seen. Happy and helpful students, good atmosphere and such a fun place to be all day. Niki's bus stop home is a little interesting. When I was there with her there were at least 3 people talking to themselves and one person w/ only one shoe on (other shoe was in hand and she was talking to the shoe). Niki, of course, enjoyed this. The urban school scene seems like a good match for her. Niki's 14th birthday is this Friday and we're taking her to a scary midnight movie and throwing her a party. Fun!

Now onto Sid. First of all, he cut his hair! No, he didn't get it cut in time for his first day of school photo or for his learner's permit* photo or even for his school photo. But it is shorter now and I like it. Sid is super busy this year. He's taking AP Euro History, Biology, Math honors, Spanish 3, Language Arts and he's on the school newspaper. Just today I found out that he's not only too busy to come home for lunch but he's too busy to even eat. This is not good. AP Euro seems to be the huge time suck and he told me if it weren't for the fact that he loves history he'd already be burned out for the year. Tonight Sid will be reading one of his poems (it might be this one) at the Seattle Art Museum. Seattle's WITS program put together an anthology of their favorite writings created by students and Sid's work was chosen.

*Sid started driver's training last weekend. His instructor is awesome (he'd better be for what we're paying) and I think Sid will turn out to be a great driver. As Sid pulled away from our curb along w/ his instructor I had the urge to run after the car screaming "be careful baby!" but instead I stood at the window, looking out...anxiously wringing my hands. And as it turns out he was fine. He drove downtown and he thought he was pretty cool after that.
